This past week Jim & I ran the Team Hoyt 5K. If you don't know who Team Hoyt (aka Dick & Rick Hoyt) is, definitely take a look at their website. They are a father-son team that competes in marathons and iron man triathalons. Rick has cerebral palsy, and Dick has been pushing, pulling, and riding with him for at least 30 years. They are a total inspiration to a lot of people around the world - us included!
They host a small 5K in Waltham every year around Memorial Day. We ran it last year and came back again this year. It's kinda of actually a nice place to meet a handful of other people that have kids with CP or other physical disabilities -- without it being a disability specific event. (And it's a good chance to see what equipment other people are using - which, in and of itself is a good conversation ice-breaker). This time, Morty met a nice young (6 year old) girl named Kelly - who was totally captivated by him - she held out her arm to hold hands with Morty - sooooo cute! I wish I had pulled my camera out!
This year, Jim, Morty, and I actually ran quite close to Rick & Dick for a portion of the race - we had an advantage going uphill, but they definitely had an advantage going downhill (Rick is just shy of 125 lbs). After the race, Jim talked to Dick for a few moments, and we were able to get a picture of Rick & Morty together. I love how they are both wearing their sunglasses!
